Third Age Network Newsletter



TAN GROWING
Now entereing its sixth year, the Third Age Network is growing as the demand for lifelong learning expands in Ontario. Healthier seniors with awareness of keeping themselves  mentally fit are joining together to expand their horizons.  There are 22 groups who are members of TAN with over 8,000 individuals. Recent members of TAN are Life Long Learning Mississauga www.lifelong-learning-mississauga.com , Hamilton Third Age Learning at www.htal.ca, Canterbury Elder College (Windsor), www.uwindsor.ca/canterbury/eldercollege, Durham Lifelong Learning, www.durhamlifelonglearning.org and Third Age Learning York Region.

YORK REGION PLANS
A new lifelong learning group is underway in Aurora and has already come up with some Spring lectures and is planning a series for the Fall. On May 12, the speaker will be Dr. Mike Daley and on May 26, Dr. Peter Russell will address the audience. Tickets are $10 cash at the door. TAN WEBMASTERS MEET AT GEORGE BROWN
Austin Knowlton from Third Age Burlington led 11 TAN members through a very interesting session on setting up and running a web page and all that implies. STRONG LINEUP FOR TALK SERIES BY ACADEMY
The CEO of Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games will kick off the six lectures of the Academy for Lifelong Learning. Included in the Wednesday morning series (April 9 to May 14) will be Patrick Martin of the Globe and Mail, Janet Carding, CEO of ROM and Dr. Samir K. Sinha of the Ontario Seniors Strategy. The lectures will be held at the UofT;s Emmanuel College on Charles Street. Non-members are welcome to attend ($10 per lecture) and full details can be found on the Academy website, www.allto.ca









Ryerson's Chang School Programs for 50+ is once again presenting a full program of energizing sessions on topics that redefine aging. From Sunday, June 1 through Tuesday, June 3, the festival engages older adults interested in personal growth and continued learning. LEARNING UNLIMITED - AN URBAN HERO


TAN member, Learning Unlimited from Etobicoke, was honoured on June 24, 2013 by the Guardian Newspaper as an "Urban Hero" at a ceremony at the Old Mill, along with two of their lecturers who nominated the group, Dr. John Percy and his wife, Dr. Maria Percy. Accepting the award, a beautiful statuette, is LU president, Loretta Fines, shown in the middle of the photo.




LLIR GIVES BACK TO GLENDON
LLIR (Living & Learning in Retirement) is proud to be celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and now has over 1,000 members.The lifelong learning group, which is located on the beautiful Glendon College campus, donated a cheque to Friends of Glendon for $25,000 to set up a scholarship for a French immersion student. This was presented on November 8, 2013 by current LLIR president Carole Langford (left) to Jessica Perkins, Friends of Glendon and Dr. K. McRoberts, Principal of Glendon. Over the years donations have totalled over $600,000.
